Most of azelaic acid is used to produce dioctyl azelate (DOZ) plasticizer. Other uses are as a raw material for fragrances, lubricants, oils, and polyamide resins. DOZ is used as a cold-resistant plasticizer for cables, films, artificial leather, etc. It has low volatility and good aging resistance. DOZ can also be used as a softener for synthetic rubber. The azelaic acid used to produce DOZ in Japan accounts for about 70% of the total consumption of azelaic acid. Azelaic acid can be dehydrated to produce azelonitrile.
